If you have been convicted of a DUI in the state of Georgia, this is what to expect regarding penalties:

Fine

A fine of $600-$1000 plus any statutory surcharges.

License Suspension

Cases made on or after July 1, 2001

Your driver's license will be suspended for three years and you will not be able to have your driver's license reinstated for a period of 18 months . The first twelve months is a hard suspension, which means you will not receive a limited permit or hardship license. After that, an ignition interlock limited permit is required for 6 months, which means you must blow into a machine, proving that you have no alcohol before your car will start.

If you are under 21 and have received a second offense, you will receive an 18 month suspension.

License Plates

If you are convicted of DUI, your license plates of all registered vehicles will be confiscated. No new plates will be issued to you until you obtain a limited permit or full reinstatement of driving privileges. Under certain conditions, a hardship license plate is available to a co-owner of the vehicle or to family members.

Photo Published

For cases made on or after May 1, 1999, your photograph, name and address, as well as the date, time, place of arrest will be published in your local newspaper. You will be charged $25.00 for this notice.

Community Service

If your case was on or after July 1, 2001, the minimum community service is 30 days. 

Jail

You will receive 90 days to 12 months, all except three days of which may be suspended, stayed, or probated. If your case fell on or after May 1, 1999, you must do twelve months probation less any jail time.
